One of the Greenshanks caught on the recent mini-expedition to NW Scotland was ringed on 9th August 2009 as a juvenile by Raymond Duncan and his team at Montrose Basin in NE Scotland. Judy Duncan was the ringer! It was retrapped at Montrose 13 days later when its weight had jumped from 180 grams to 242 grams. Any passage greenshank over 200 grammes is considered to be stocked up and ready to move on. They are likely to be migrating a long way south and not stopping in northern Europe. Unfortunately there were no further sightings over the winter. This is the first direct evidence linking the coastal birds using the Ythan Estuary near Aberdeen and Montrose with the Scottish breeding grounds. It is very interesting that it was breeding in its first summer.
